Background: NHL Regular-Season Games in Sweden

The headline refers to the New Jersey Devils, whose 2018-19 NHL season began with a regular-season game in Gothenburg, Sweden, as part of the league's Global Series. That season has long since finished, but the story behind it is still worth knowing for any hockey fan who likes the idea of combining travel with live sport.

The NHL has a long history of taking games to Europe, and Sweden is a natural destination. The country has produced a large number of NHL players, its domestic league, the SHL, is one of the strongest in Europe, and arenas in cities such as Stockholm and Gothenburg are built for big hockey crowds. Clubs scheduled for these trips often play exhibition games against European teams during the same visit, giving local supporters a chance to see NHL players up close and giving the visiting players a taste of a very different fan culture.

What these international games mean for fans

  • Atmosphere: European crowds often bring chants, drums and flags, which makes for a livelier feel than many North American regular-season games.
  • Scheduling: Games are usually announced well in advance, and tickets tend to go quickly because they are rare events.
  • Travel planning: If you are thinking of travelling for a future overseas game, sort out flights and accommodation early, and check the official NHL and arena websites for confirmed dates and ticket releases.

Closer to home, Nashville offers plenty of live hockey of its own, along with concerts and theater year-round. You can see what is coming up on our events listings, read about local arenas in our venue guides, and learn how purchases are protected through the Fan Guarantee.
